Few areas of the law have so many crimes and violations associated with them that an entire, separate court system has been set up to deal with them; illicit drugs is one of those areas. Selling drugs is a crime, manufacturing drugs is a crime, and just possessing drugs is a crime. One particular crime that doesn't get as much attention is transportation of drugs for sale, though it is a serious offense going on every day.
What is Drug Transportation?
According to California Health and Safety Codes 11360, 11352 and 11379, drug transportation is, quite simply, the transportation of illegal drugs from point A to point B for purposes of sale. It could be as simple as being given a backpack with marijuana in it and being told to walk across town to deliver it, or packing a semi-trailer full of tons of cocaine; the crime is the same (though the severity is obviously different).
There are a lot of factors that come into play with a drug transportation case: factors such as what type of drug was transported, how much was transported, whether it crossed national or state lines, and whether or not its sale was to be aimed at minors. If someone knowingly transports drugs (if someone got into a cab with a briefcase full of heroin then the passenger would be guilty of transportation, but if the driver of the cab didn't know then no charges would be brought against him), then that person can be in for an uphill legal battle.
